Haunted places in Delaware

Small as it is, Delaware has a big Civil War ghost story on an island in the river, along with colonial houses where old residents are said to keep watch.

Fort Delaware State Park

Civil War fort Pea Patch Island (via Delaware City), DE

Completed in 1859, Fort Delaware held thousands of Confederate prisoners during the Civil War, and many died there of disease. Visitors and reenactors report voices, footsteps and figures in uniform, and the park hosts paranormal tours in the fall.

Visiting: Reached by seasonal ferry from Delaware City, with living history programs and fall paranormal tours; check Delaware State Parks for schedules.

Woodburn

Historic house Dover, DE

Built in the late 1700s, Woodburn has served as the official residence of Delaware's governor since 1965. Its best-known legend is of a gentleman in colonial dress said to sip from wine decanters, along with tales of a ghostly girl in the garden.

Visiting: Official governor's residence; check with the state for occasional public tours or open houses.

Ghost stories are shared as folklore. Hours, tours and access change — always check with the site before you go, and never enter private or closed property.
