Haunted HI

Haunted places in Hawaii

Hawaiian tradition speaks of night marchers, the spirits of ancient warriors, and of respecting sacred places, while Waikiki's first hotels add their own ghost stories.

Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa

Historic hotel Honolulu, HI

Opened in 1901 as the Moana Hotel, this is the oldest hotel in Waikiki. Stanford University co-founder Jane Stanford died there in 1905 of strychnine poisoning, a case never solved, and guests have reported a woman in Victorian dress in the older wing.

Visiting: Operating beachfront hotel; the historic lobby and veranda are open to visitors.

Nuʻuanu Pali State Wayside

Historic lookout Honolulu, HI

The windy cliffs of the Pali were the scene of the 1795 Battle of Nuʻuanu, when Kamehameha I's forces drove defenders over the edge during his conquest of Oʻahu. Local tradition tells of night marchers on the old trails and warns against carrying pork over the Pali road.

Visiting: State lookout open during daylight hours; respect posted signs and the site's cultural importance.

Ghost stories are shared as folklore. Hours, tours and access change — always check with the site before you go, and never enter private or closed property.
