Haunted places in Idaho

Idaho ghost stories come from its territorial prison and the mining camps that emptied out when the gold and silver ran dry.

Old Idaho Penitentiary State Historic Site

Former prison Boise, ID

The penitentiary held inmates from 1872 until 1973, and its sandstone cell blocks were built in part by prisoners themselves. Visitors and staff report footsteps, whispers and a heavy feeling in the solitary cells, and the site holds special evening events in the fall.

Visiting: State historic site open to the public with seasonal evening programs; check Idaho State History for hours.

Custer Ghost Town (Land of the Yankee Fork State Park)

Ghost town Near Stanley, ID

Custer grew up around gold mining in the late 1870s and was largely abandoned by the early 1900s; some buildings now serve as a museum. Legends say miners who never left still walk the quiet road, and the nearby Bonanza cemeteries add to the area's eerie reputation.

Visiting: Open seasonally in summer as part of the state park; roads may close in winter.

Ghost stories are shared as folklore. Hours, tours and access change — always check with the site before you go, and never enter private or closed property.
