Haunted places in Montana

Montana's ghosts are frontier ghosts: gold camp residents, copper kings and territorial prisoners who left their mark on the high plains and mountains.

Old Montana Prison

Former prison Deer Lodge, MT

The territorial prison opened in 1871, and its castle-like walls held inmates until 1979; it now anchors a complex of museums. Visitors report footsteps and voices in the cell house, and the site has been featured on paranormal programs.

Bannack State Park

Ghost town Dillon, MT

Bannack sprang up after a gold strike in 1862 and briefly served as Montana's first territorial capital; dozens of its buildings still stand. Visitors tell of a girl in a blue dress at the Hotel Meade and children's voices in the old schoolhouse.

Visiting: State park open year-round, with seasonal ghost walks; check Montana State Parks for details.

The Copper King Mansion

Victorian mansion Butte, MT

Built in the 1880s for copper magnate William A. Clark, the mansion has been privately owned and preserved by the same family since 1953. Guests and staff report unexplained footsteps and the sense of being watched in the richly decorated rooms.

Visiting: Bed and breakfast with guided tours in season and by appointment in winter; check the official site.Official site →
