Haunted ME

Haunted places in Maine

Maine's rocky coast is lined with lighthouses and granite forts, and fog-bound stories of keepers and soldiers come with the territory.

Fort Knox State Historic Site

Granite fort Prospect, ME

Built between 1844 and 1869 to guard the Penobscot River, Fort Knox never saw combat. Visitors report voices and footsteps in its dark passageways, and the fort hosts a popular Halloween-season event.

Visiting: State historic site open seasonally, next to the Penobscot Narrows Observatory; check hours before visiting.

Wood Island Light

Lighthouse Biddeford Pool, ME

The station dates to 1808, and the current tower was built in 1858. A fatal shooting on the island in 1896 gave rise to ghost stories, and visitors and volunteers have described moans and moving shadows.

Visiting: Reached only by boat on volunteer-led summer tours; reservations required.

Ghost stories are shared as folklore. Hours, tours and access change — always check with the site before you go, and never enter private or closed property.
