Haunted places in Vermont

Vermont's covered bridges and old inns set the stage for some of New England's most charming ghost stories.

Gold Brook Covered Bridge (Emily's Bridge)

Covered bridge Stowe, VT

Built in 1844, the bridge is the subject of a legend about a heartbroken woman named Emily. No record of such a death has been found, and the story seems to have started in the 1960s or 1970s, but visitors still report scratches on cars and strange sounds.

Visiting: Public roadway bridge; visit during the day and watch for traffic.

Green Mountain Inn

Historic inn Stowe, VT

Dating to 1833, the inn is in the heart of Stowe village. Its best-known spirit is Boots Berry, a former employee said to tap-dance on the roof during snowstorms.

Visiting: Operating inn and restaurant.Official site →
