Haunted places in Ohio

Ohio's haunted places include a castle-like prison, a former asylum on a hill and a lonely railroad tunnel deep in the Appalachian woods.

Ohio State Reformatory

Former prison Mansfield, OH

The reformatory opened in 1896 and closed in 1990, and it later became famous as the main filming location for "The Shawshank Redemption." Visitors on ghost hunts report voices, shoves and shadow figures in the cell blocks and the warden's quarters.

Moonville Tunnel

Railroad tunnel Near McArthur (Vinton County), OH

This brick-lined tunnel stands on a 19th-century rail line near the vanished mining town of Moonville. Legends tell of a lantern-swinging railroad worker and other figures seen in and around the tunnel.

Visiting: Reached by a public rail-trail; visit in daylight and watch your footing.

The Ridges

Former asylum Athens, OH

Opened in 1874 as the Athens Lunatic Asylum, the complex is now part of Ohio University and houses the Kennedy Museum of Art. One famous legend tells of a stain on a ward floor in the shape of a body that cannot be scrubbed away.

Visiting: University property; the Kennedy Museum of Art is open to the public, but many buildings are closed.

Ghost stories are shared as folklore. Hours, tours and access change — always check with the site before you go, and never enter private or closed property.
