Haunted places in Illinois

Chicago and its suburbs have some of the best-known urban legends in America, from a hitchhiking ghost to an abandoned cemetery in the woods.

Bachelor's Grove Cemetery

Cemetery Midlothian, IL

This small 19th-century pioneer cemetery sits in the Rubio Woods Forest Preserve and fell into neglect after the road beside it closed. Visitors tell of a woman in white, glowing lights and a phantom farmhouse, and it is often called one of the most haunted cemeteries in the country.

Visiting: Reached by a short walk on a forest preserve trail; open only during daylight preserve hours.

Resurrection Cemetery (Resurrection Mary)

Cemetery Justice, IL

Since at least the 1930s, drivers on Archer Avenue have told of picking up a young woman in a white dress who asks for a ride and then vanishes near the cemetery gates. The legend of "Resurrection Mary" is one of the most famous vanishing-hitchhiker stories in the United States.

Visiting: Active Catholic cemetery; visit respectfully during posted hours and drive carefully on Archer Avenue.

Ghost stories are shared as folklore. Hours, tours and access change — always check with the site before you go, and never enter private or closed property.
